Help Me Hank: Mushrooms growing on the wall in a trendy Detroit neighborhood

DETROIT – Those living in the Sheridian Court Apartment reached out to Help Me Hank after they say their concern over the condition of the apartment was ignored by their landlord.

Now the city is taking action and the management is trying to tackle this big problem.

Inside the apartments at Sheridian Court, you can find charred walls, gaping holes and mushrooms growing on the inside.

The hip midtown apartments just around the corner from Shinola, the Sheridian Court Apartments have one of the hottest addresses in the city. However, residents say living there has become a hazard.

When Local 4’s consumer investigator Hank Winchester attempted to speak to the landlord Bob Johnson, he was met with a hand in the camera’s face and eviction letter for one of the tenants who originally complained.

Inspection reports reveal a number of issues which include everything from a lack of smoke alarms to rodent issues.

The director of Detroit’s Building and Safety Department, David Bell, says work is now being done at a rapid pace to avoid any more costly fines to the building.

Crews are now working to correct issues and the city says major progress has recently been made.
