Help Me Hank: Two mothers reveal strategies to save money with coupons

Chandra Johnson began saving money with coupons out of necessity.

"At one point in my life, I was a single parent with three children, and I just wanted to maximize my dollar," Johnson said.

She is so successful at couponing now that she says she saves thousands of dollars.

"I would say about $3,000 to $5,000 a year," Johnson said. "There's a strategy to it and I learned that strategy, and I monopolize that strategy."

Nora Kapche's original goal was to be a stay at home mother. She used the money she saved by couponing to supplement her income. It has grown from there into her own business with her website Coupon Contessa, on which she reveals her secrets to saving the most money.

She said she spends about $50 a week shopping for a family of four, thanks to coupons.

Both shared their expertise with coupons.

Strategy One: Don't waste your time clipping every single coupon. Clip what you need and stash the others away until those items go on sale in the store. They advise keeping inserts 30 to 90 days.

Johnson also advised using technology. She likes the new app Flipp, which has the fliers from many of the stores where people shop.

"It kind of saves some of my time from running around and getting the circulars and finding out what the ads were," Johnson said.

Strategy Two: Maximize your savings.

"The biggest part of couponing is to take the sales advertised in stores and combining that with a coupon on top to save the most money," Kapche said.

Strategy Three: Never pay full price for essential personal items.

Johnson said toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, mouthwash and even laundry detergent are given away with sales and coupons.

"Always combine those with a sale and a coupon to save the most money," Kapche said.

Johnson and Kapche said not to get discouraged if you're not saving hundreds immediately. They advise starting small. Saving 20 to 30 percent off your final bill is a win, they said.
