Kroger says beef at its Michigan stores is safe

Canadian company XL Foods recalling beef products for E. coli

DETROIT – Kroger Co. says its Michigan stores are not affected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's current ground beef recall by the Canadian meat packing company XL Foods, Inc. for E. coli.

"The Kroger ground beef products sold in our stores in Michigan are not included in this recall," said Dale Hollandsworth, Kroger customer communications manager. "If a recall were to occur, Kroger would initiate our customer recall notification system to alert all customers who may have purchased recalled product."

According to the FSIS, the products subject to the Canadian recall were distributed to U.S. establishments in the following states: California, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin at retailers including Food4Less FoodsCo., Kroger, Safeway and Jay C. These products may have been further processed into various products, such as ground beef, ground beef patties, beef jerky and pastrami. FSIS is taking every precaution to make sure that potentially affected product has been removed from commerce.

The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 am to 4 pm ET Monday through Friday. 

Beef Safety Tips

  • Cook beef to 160ºF.
  • Use a meat thermometer to confirm beef reaches the recommended internal temperature. Insert the thermometer into the center of the beef from the side.
  • Always wash your hands for 20 seconds before and after handling raw beef.
  • These tips are especially important for gatherings that include young children, pregnant women, older adults or individuals with weakened immune systems.
