What is listeria?

According to the Center for Disease and Control (CDC), listeria is a gastrointestinal infection that targets older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems.

Listeria is an invasive infection, as the bacteria can spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract.

Symptoms

The common symptoms are muscle aches and fever and may be preceded with diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Severe symptoms include stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

The mild symptoms are similar for pregnant women, but in severe cases, miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn can occur.

Treatment

Listeria can be treated with antibiotics. The CDC recommends seeking medical attention within two months of consumption.
