Fresh fruits are not more expensive

Consumer group compares cost, calories

There's a common belief out there that fresh fruits and vegetables are more expensive than packaged snacks. Some argue that's part of America's battle with obesity. However, the Center for Science in the Public Interest is hoping to bust that myth once and for all.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest crunched the numbers on cost and calories for several snacks and side dishes. Check out three examples it cites to debunk the myth that fresh is synonymous with more expensive. All the numbers come from the Center for the Science in the Public Interest and are average prices.

1) Half-a-cup of apple costs 26 cents. One roll of the "Fruit by the Foot" costs 45 cents.

2) Half-a-cup of grapes costs 46 cents. One package of M&Ms is 75 cents. The candy has almost five times the calories.

3) Half-a-cup of cantaloupe costs 20 cents. A serving of Oreos (3 cookies) costs 27 cents. The cookies have more than six times the calories.
