A teenager faces second-degree murder charges after she reportedly drowned her newborn baby in a hospital toilet.
A nurse reportedly found the infant in a toilet after checking on the 16-year-old girl who had been taken to Providence Hospital by her mother after she was complaining of stomach pain.
Southfield police said that the Selena Lajoy Jones gave birth in the hospital's patient care room around 12:15 a.m. Attempts by hospital staff to revive the infant were reportedly unsuccessful.
Southfield police said that they were called to the hospital around 1 a.m.
Jones was charged as an adult in her hospital bed. She is expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday and will then be moved to the county lock-up.
An autopsy revealed that the infant died from drowning.
Oakland County's assistant prosecutor said that if the girl had merely handed the infant to a physician, she could have just walked away because of the Safe Delivery Act.
