Turtle Drawings Deface Detroit Landmarks

Police Offer Reward For Information

POSTED: 2:45 p.m. EDT April 18, 2003
UPDATED: 4:31 p.m. EDT April 18, 2003

Police continue their search for the persons responsible for the turtle drawings defacing city property.
TURTLE GRAFFITI?

Hundreds of spray-painted, scrawled or stenciled images of turtles have appeared across town, signed with variations on the word "turtle."

Graffiti is a common sight in lower-income areas of many cities, but turtles have appeared on a sculpture in front of the Detroit Artists' Market and on the posh Whitney Restaurant, according to reports.

They've also shown up on freshly painted walls or buildings undergoing renovation.

Detroit merchants are offering a $1,000 reward for suspects.

Police say if the turtle vandals are caught, they'll face felony charges.

Local graffiti artists consider the turtle culprits disrespectful to true artists in the city.
