Man Walks From Florida To Beantown To Fight Obesity

1,200-Mile Walk Is Effort To Inspire People To Consider Lifestyle Changes

POSTED: Thursday, June 10, 2004

What are you doing to fight obesity? Whatever it is, it likely won't top one man's 1,200-mile journey.

On April 6, Gary Marino started a cross-country walk for obesity in what he calls the Million Calorie March. He's walking from Jacksonville, Fla., to his home in Boston, which he plans to reach by July 16.

Marino, whose weight topped 397 pounds three years ago, has lost 140 pounds -- 110 before he started his walk and 30 pounds since he started. He's raising money for a nonprofit group he started in Boston to help kids fight obesity and said the statistics in the United States are shocking, reported WBAL-TV in Baltimore.

Marino has many sponsors for the trip and a documentary is being made about his journey. Along the way, he's stopping to talk to students and the public about the challenges of obesity.

He hopes his walk will inspire people to take a good look at their lifestyles and believes most of us can make a change for the better.

To lose weight, Marino said he took the team diet approach -- using a dietician, therapist and personal trainer.
