YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Two Eastern Michigan University students startled an intruder Thursday when they woke up to find him inside their apartment, Ypsilanti police said.
Watch:
EMU Students Robbed In Off-Campus ApartmentPolice said the students were asleep in their off-campus apartment in the 600 block of Emmet Street just before 4 a.m. when one of them woke up and saw a man standing in the bedroom.
"All I saw was the silhouette of his body," said Mitch Kellerman who startled the suspect. "He was just like, is Josh here? I'm like, no, Josh doesn't live here. I'm like who are you? And he turned around, walked, like ran out, and I like it took me a second to like know what was going on because I just woke up."
Police said the intruder took off, but that the students' flat screen television was missing. A safe in another room was pulled out from a hiding place.
“(He) stole our TV, purses, my brother’s cologne," said Brooke Gancarz. "I come from a little town that none of this stuff happens and we were all sleeping and it's just scary that they could get all that stuff out without us even knowing it."
The roommates had a St. Patrick’s Day party Wednesday night, but said they checked the locks three times before they went to bed.
"I've lived in here for four years, and I think you, would think it will happen eventually, but you never think it's going to happen to you," said Kellerman.
The intruder has not been arrested.
Police said a similar incident happened across the street a few months ago. In that case, the intruder broke in while the girls inside where asleep. Officers said this should be a reminder to people to keep their doors and windows locked at night.
Anyone with information on the break-in is asked to contact the Ypsilanti Police Department at 734-483-9510.
