Governor Plans To Cut State School Bus Inspections
Granholm Says Cuts Will Save $1.3 Million
Granholm is hoping that the school districts will take on the inspections after the cuts, but some parents said that's not enough, the station reported."I think it should be a higher authority responsible for making sure that the kids are safe," said Adrian Gordon, a parent. The governor says the cuts to the inspections would save the state $1.3 million toward achieving a balanced budget."We just do not have the money. We are $770 million in the hole, so we recommended reviewing all of our programs," Granholm said.Nathaniel Jones, a transportation employee, said the state could pay a higher price by making the cuts."The state's cutting their own throat because the minute something happens wrong, then we're going to get the blame for it," Jones said. The safety inspections discover potentially dangerous defects, Local 4 reported. In 2004, 190 of Detroit's 400 school buses were issued a red flag and taken out of service. Nineteen were issued a yellow flag -- which indicates a less severe problem -- and the school district was given 60 days to make repairs.Seven of 16 Hazel Park buses were red tagged in 2004 and four of 12 buses in Macomb County's East Detroit School District were also issued a red tag, the station reported."To eliminate (state inspections) altogether is dangerously irresponsible, I think," said Dale Goby, executive director of the office of student transportation for Detroit.Granholm's plan still needs Senate approval. The governor must show a balanced budget by October, Local 4 reported.
