School District Bans Mouth Grills, Gauging

School Officials Say Banned Items Pose Safety Hazard

Grills and gauging are now out in one suburban Dallas school district.

Grills are mouth jewelry that fit over the teeth and look something like a grill on the front of a car.

Gauging is the practice of earlobe-stretching with increasingly large earrings.

School officials in Arlington have added the banned items to the dress code saying they're a distraction and raise potential safety issues.

Grills range in price from a couple of hundred dollars to thousands.

Sam Houston High junior Devonte Wright doesn't see what all fuss is about.

"Really, a grill is just like an earring. It's fashion," Wright told The Dallas Morning News.

But school officials said they hoped to teach students that life would require them to follow specific regulations in specific settings, the newspaper reported.

"We want to instill in them a sense of modesty and a sense of community," school board trustee Gloria Pena told the paper. "We're preparing them for the workforce, and in the workforce there are rules."
