Southfield school honored for stance against bullying

Pace Academy recognized as 'No Place for Hate' school

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Anti-Defamation League has honored a Southfield charter school for its stance against bullying.

Pace Academy adopted the 'No Place for Hate' program earlier this year.

On Monday, the Anti-Defamation League raised a banner officially making it a 'No Place for Hate' school, one of only 82 in the state of Michigan.

"Much more positive atmosphere. The kids seem happier," said Megan Black, a teacher.

'No Place for Hate' is a year long, free anti-bullying program that teaches tolerance and acceptance of differences.

Students signed the official pledge and worked the entire school year completing essays and projects for the recognition.

"It changed my because I realized that you don't have to be afraid to stand up for what's right," said Jailan Drake, a 7th grader who has been bullied.

Drake created a line of arm bands and t-shirts filled with encouraging quotes as part of the program. The brand is called "F.A.B." for Fight Against Bullying.

Out of 150 designs for the logo, Steven Weaver, an 8th grader, created the winning design.

"I just want to leave the school with something to be remembered by," said Weaver.
