(CNN) -

Character actor Ned Wertimer, known to fans of "The Jeffersons" as the doorman Ralph Hart, has died, CNN confirms. He was 89.

Wertimer made appearances in a wide variety of classic TV shows, including "Mork and Mindy," "WKRP in Cincinatti" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," but he's perhaps best known for his work on "The Jeffersons."

Wertimer stayed with the comedy, which portrayed Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford as the newly wealthy African-American couple George and Louise Jefferson, for 11 seasons. (Hemsley died in July 2012 at the age of 74, and Sanford died in 2004.)

A rep for Wertimer tells CNN that the actor passed away January 2 from complications stemming from a fall he sustained in his Burbank home in late November.

Throughout his career, the Buffalo, New York native worked on Broadway and appeared in more than 100 TV programs and series.
