'Silver Linings,' 'Moonrise' lead Spirit nods
The nominations are pouring in for David O. Russell's critically praised "Silver Linings Playbook."
The new release, which stars Bradley Cooper as an unstable man who moves back in with his parents after a stint in a mental hospital and Jennifer Lawrence as his equally unstable friend, has picked up five Film Independent Spirit Award nominations, including best feature.
In that category, the dramatic comedy will compete with "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Bernie," "Keep the Lights On" and Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," which also led the Spirit Awards nominations Tuesday with a total of five.
Both Anderson and "Silver Linings" helmer Russell are competing for the best director title, along with Julia Loktev ("The Loneliest Planet"); Ira Sachs ("Keep the Lights On"); and Benh Zeitlin ("Beasts of the Southern Wild").
Quvenzhané Wallis, the young star of "Beasts" who enamored moviegoers with her performance, is nominated for a best female lead award, along with "Silver Linings" actress Lawrence; Linda Cardellini ("Return"); Emayatzy Corinealdi ("Middle of Nowhere"); and Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Smashed").
For the male lead category, it'll be Cooper in "Silver Linings"; Jack Black ("Bernie"); John Hawkes ("The Sessions"); Thure Lindhardt ("Keep the Lights On"); Wendell Pierce ("Four"); and Matthew McConaughey ("Killer Joe") vying for the win.
(As a fun aside, McConaughey also picked up a best supporting male actor nod for his work alongside Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike.")
The 28th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which recognizes American independent filmmakers and the year's best independent films, will air Saturday, February 23 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on IFC.
