Grammy Singer With Timberlake Was 'Idol' Reject

Troup Ousted On 'Idol' Tuesday, But Segment Was Pre-Taped

POSTED: Thursday, February 15, 2007

She wasn't good enough for "American Idol" -- but Robyn Troup was certainly a hit with the Grammys.

It turns out that Troup, the winner of the My Grammy Moment contest Sunday night, was coming off a rejection from "Idol."

Even though Troup was kicked off "Idol" Tuesday -- two nights after the Grammys -- the "Idol" sequence was actually taped before she won the Grammy contest.

At the Grammys, Troup ousted two other finalists to sing a duet with Justin Timberlake near the end of the telecast.

In an ironic twist, some saw the Grammy moment competition as the music industry's way of ripping off an aspect of "American Idol," especially in view of the fact that the Fox show got higher ratings than the Grammys last year.

Troup, who is from Houston, turned 19 the day of the Grammys.

Of course, Troup isn't the only "Idol" reject to find fame after being booted off the show. Jennifer Hudson, who appeared at the Grammys, was cast off the show as a Top 10 finalist in 2004. Now the singer is considered a favorite by many to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for "Dreamgirls" later this month.

Meanwhile, on "Idol," the stable of contestants has been whittled down to 24 semifinalists.

Among the 12 men is Paul Kim, the guy who goes barefoot and wears lucky underwear made it, and curly-haired Chris Sligh, who got the judges laughing.

Still, judge Simon Cowell said Sligh is not a great singer.

Alaina Alexander couldn't stop crying when she was named one of the 12 female semifinalists.

When Alexander asked for the judges' advice, Cowell told her to blow her nose.

The final female spot was down to Marisa Rhodes and Antonella Barba. The judges called them in at the same time and give Barba the good news.

Rhodes lost it in an elevator and had to be comforted by Alexander.

Next Tuesday, the top 12 men perform, followed by the women on Wednesday.
