Professor Wrestling: 'Slammiversary' Results

NWA Out, TNA Crown In

POSTED: Thursday, June 14, 2007
UPDATED: 12:23 pm EDT June 18, 2007

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Since its beginning, Total Nonstop Action wrestling has been affiliated with the old National Wrestling Alliance. But that legal marriage is over, and TNA has adopted its own championship belts, starting with the King Of The Mountain Match this past Sunday night at the "Slammiversay" pay-per-view. Who do I think will win the inaugural TNA belt? That answer later -- but first, let's take a look at the other big matches on this card:

Challenge Match: Eric Young vs. Robert Roode
What Should Happen: If Young wins, he's released from Roode's rude employment. If Young loses, he's fired. He should win, and Roode should be humiliated as this feud (and an OK one, at that) has gone on long enough.

What Will Happen: Young wins. Freedom!

What Did Happen: Young lost. But Jim Cornette said Roode cheated, and restarted the match. Young then pinned Roode, and finally won his freedom.

Challenge Match: Bob Backlund vs. Alex Shelley
What Should Happen: Former WWF champ Bob Backlund makes his return to the ring against X-Division star Alex Shelley. Clearly, Backlund should win. Why else put him in the match? For an Alex Shelley push? Please.

What Will Happen: Backlund defeats Shelley with the dreaded chicken-wing.

What Did Happen: Backlund took care of Shelley very quickly, getting the pin.

Professor Wrestling Audio Podcast: 'Old School, New School' -- Episode 34!

Challenge Match: Sting vs. Christopher Daniels
What Should Happen: They're building Daniels into being a killer heel. No need to stop his momentum here in a non-title match. Daniels should cheat to win

What Will Happen: Daniels will take it.

What Did Happen: Sting pinned Daniels.

X-Division Title Match: Chris Sabin (c) vs. Jay Lethal
What Should Happen: Lethal gets the title match due to the strength of his impersonation of Randy "Macho Man" Savage. It I were booking things, I'd have Savage make an appearance, pretending to be Lethal's pal. After the match was over -- with Sabin winning -- I'd have Savage then turn on Lethal, pummeling him for no other reason than he didn't like being mimicked and mocked.

What Will Happen: No matter what, Sabin retains his title.

What Did Happen: Unless Lethal wins, which is what happened. Oh well.

TNA Tag Team Title Match: Team 3D (c) vs. The Steiner Brothers
What Should Happen: Word has it that Scott Steiner is injured and this match won't go off as advertised. Not that it mattered, because I would book Team 3D to win anyway.

What Will Happen: The former Dudley Boyz will grapple and win -- no matter who the replacement team turns out to be.

What Did Happen: Team 3D won their match against Rick Steiner and Road Warrior Animal, who filled in for Big Poppa Pump.

King Of The Mountain TNA Title Match: Christian vs. Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe vs. A.J. Styles vs. ???
What Should Happen: As of press time, there's still a fifth wrestler to be added. For my money, no performer has done more for TNA than Styles. He's clearly the best grappler in the field, and should be rewarded for his years of hard work.

What Will Happen: I'm sticking with my pick. Styles will win the first TNA heavyweight belt.

What Did Happen: Chris Harris was the fifth man in the match. He was a factor down the stretch as he prevented Christian from winning the belt. In the end, Kurt Angle was the victor, and your new TNA champ.

That's it. For the record, I had three right, three wrong for this pay-per-view. That's called batting .500, kids. Is A-Rod that good? Didn't think so.

One other point of order before class is over. A lot of you wondered what I thought of Vince McMahon "dying" on "RAW" this past Monday night. To hear my thoughts on the issue, check out EPISODE 34 of "Old School, New School" -- the Professor Wrestling podcast. As always, my co-hosts are the great George Schire and the sensational Dr. Mike Lano as we yak about all things relating to the squared circle, past and present. To be honest, these guys do all the heavy lifting, with yours truly getting in a few words or two. (They're that dang good.)

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
