MUMBAI – Bollywood's original superstar has died in Mumbai at just 69-years-old following a prolonged illness.

The actor has legions of fans, including countless women, due to the many romantic hits he starred in during the '70s.

Hailed as the "King of Romance" and a "powerhouse" of the Hindu film industry, people across the world are mourning Rajesh on Wednesday.

Tributes flooded Twitter from people including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and fellow Bollywood actors as "RIP Rajesh Khanna" became a trending topic on the social media site.

Kaka, as he was popularly known, was one of the highest paid actors of his time, his record of consecutive solo super hits still unbroken. Between 1970-1979 when he starred in Bollywood mega hits including Safar, Kati Patang, Sachaa Jhutha, Aan Milo Sajna, Anand, Amar Prem and Mere Jeevan Saathi.

In his four-decade career, he appeared in about 160 films.

The actor will be cremated at 11 am on Thursday.
He is survived by his ex-wife Dimple Kapadia and daughters Twinkle Khanna and Rinki Khanna.
