MILWAUKEE -- A transsexual married a woman Friday morning at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.

Barbara Lynn Terrry, 58, was born as a man, Ronald Terry.

Terry considers herself a female, but Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge David Hansher said that, according to a doctor he spoke to, Terry is still physically a man, television station WISN reported.

Hansher said, therefore, there was no legal reason not to marry the couple.

"However, if he had wished to marry a man, the court would have decided otherwise and refused to marry them since this would be an invalid same-sex marriage under the law," Hansher said in the statment he issued.

Terry married 22-year-old Australian Nicole Winstanley.

There have been similar cases in a handful of states across the nation, according to New York Law School professor Arthur Leonard, an expert in sexual-orientation law.

Milwaukee County Clerk Mark Ryan said the license was issued because they showed documents stating that Terry was a male and Winstanley was a female.

While anyone was allowed at the courthouse, the couple was not pleased to see television cameras present.
