Group Lists Year's Most Dangerous Toys
POSTED: Tuesday, November 13, 2007
A group of toy safety advocates has released its
annual list of 10 toys it says are most hazardous to children.
World Against Toys Causing Harm argues that the government doesn't do enough to ensure that toymakers sell safe toys.
The group said its list tries to highlight toys with clear hazards. This year that includes Sticky Stones, which are magnetized rocks that can stick together in the intestines.
The group also warns that Jack Sparrow's Spinning Dagger, based on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, could cause serious eye injuries.
Another toy, the Spider-Man 3 New Goblin Sword, isn't supposed to be jabbed at people, but the group says it's marketed so that kids do exactly that.
Other items on the list are:
Recalled Go Diego Go animal rescue boats that were recalled because of high levels of lead A Dora the Explorer lamp because it contains several warnings that it is not a toy, despite its appearance Lil "Giddy Up" horse sets that say it is intended for children starting at birth, alongside tags that say it is intended for children 18 months and older Hip Hoppa ball, which is a board on a ball, with a strap as hand holds. The group says children on the packaging are not shown wearing safety gear Balloonies party packs, which include tubes of chemicals that can be blown into shapes. WATCH says chemicals should not be near kids' faces My Little Baby Born because a pacifier attached by a string can come off easily and be a choking hazard A rubber band shooter. The group says rubber bands should never be sold as toys, even with warnings about never aiming at peopleThe group also included a special alert about Aqua Dots, the arts-and-crafts toy recently recalled because a coating can turn into the "date-rape drug" GHB when ingested.
