DETROIT -- At most suburban beaches, the water is tested regularly; however, that is not the case at Detroit's only public access beach on Belle Isle.
Detroit is required by law to test the water, it does not have to release the results.
So to help keep the public informed, 25 students will be spending their summer testing the water at Belle Isle beach, and releasing the results.
Their testing is slated to begin at the end of June.
University of Michigan researchers discovered high levels of E. coli in the water at Belle Isle in 2005.
"People are out here with their kids, they need to be informed of what's going on," said beachgoer Andrea Winters. "It's just for people's safety."
The Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice group plans to give beachgoers access to water test results very soon.
"The concern we have is the missing link," said the group's Donele Wilkins. "The public doesn't get the information of the beach water. I'm not saying every day there's a threat, but there is a potential threat."
Researchers at Wayne State University will analyze the water samples and the results will be posted on Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice's web site,
