Michigan Web Site Tracks Down Deadbeat Parents
POSTED: 12:10 p.m. EDT October 16, 2003
Attorney General Mike Cox launched the PayKids Initiative program Thursday. It's aimed at shaming deadbeat parents to get them to pay up on child support.
One Canton woman who is on the list owes more than $100,000.
"We want to educate the public as well as reach out to victims and educate the public on this issue," Cox said. "We will continue to pressure those deadbeat parents who owe support to 650,000 children to fulfill their responsibilities," Cox said.
More than 35 billboards will be placed across Michigan to raise awareness, Cox said.
People looking for resources to collect child support can call a toll free number (866) PAY-KIDS or check out the
www.paykids.com.
In Michigan, owed child support exceeds $7 billion, the third worst total in the country, behind Texas and California.
