Immersive Learning Experience Let's Kids Interact

POSTED: 4:29 pm EST February 19, 2004

A whole new dimension in learning has no playground, no basketball court and no traditional classrooms, but inside there's a lake, a forest, a cave and an entire city where kids take part in immersive learning.

Fourth-grade students from Eureka Heights Elementary had six weeks of preparatory learning. Today, they are all scientists -- zoologists, botanists and herpetologists.

It's a simulated habitat called Earthworks where they study the lake, grassland, forest and cave and explore the fish and wildlife that live there.

It's a form of education called immersive learning developed by Connie Campbell.

"Immersive learning is a form of education that is based on simulation learning theory and the groups that have mastered that are like the Army or the way pilots are trained," said Campbell.

In addition to Earthworks, there's Exchange City, where kids become business people and elected officials.

They also try out different careers such as bank tellers, judges, postal workers and even police officers.
