The Henry Ford has classes and camps for all ages. Participants can work with the Greenfield Village draft horse team or learn to drive a Model T and that's just the beginning.

SUMMER CAMPS

One week Discovery Camps are offered at The Henry Ford during the summer for 2nd to 8th grade students. From hiking and historic camping to assembling a real 1920's Model T, Discovery Campers have a one of a kind experience unlike any other camp program.

  • Level 2: Growing Up in America: Travel back in time to see how family, home and community life has changed in the past 300 years. Campers will learn how to bake spice cookies on a real coal burning stove.
  • Level 3: On the Move!: Interesting characters and experiences await campers as they travel by wagon, boat, train and Model T. The week will include a behind the scenes white glove tour of Henry Ford's personal Fairlane rail car and a chance to operate the railroad handcar.
  • Level 4: Seeds of Change: Join in as we explore the wonders of nature and harness some of its power of ourselves. Campers will take a bee keeping workshop at Firestone Farm and help prepare honey butter.
  • Level 5: What a Crazy Idea?: Calling all inventors! Investigate the work of famous inventors and make a few inventions of your own. From solar cars to video commercials, campers in level five will be inspired to invent.
  • Level 6: Hiking through History: A salute to the four vagabonds, Thomas A. Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs. The week will include trekking, fishing, canoeing on the Oxbow and overnight camping.
  • Level 7: All in a Day's Work: Become an apprentice and explore the tools and trades of 300 years past. Campers will get to work in Liberty Craftworks with the Greenfield Village glass blowers and help make a glass flower.
  • Level 8: Roll Up Your Sleeves: Honoring great American innovators this camp will introduce eighth graders to the work of Alexander Graham Bell, Buckminster Fuller, Bessie Coleman and Henry Ford. The week ends with the campers assembling a real 1920's Model T.

    ADULT CLASSES

The Henry Ford offers a variety of great experiences for the kid at heart. Cars, crafts and cooking make up just some of the exciting learning opportunities for adults.

  • Drivers Ed, 1924 – Learn how to start and operate a 1924 Model T. Students will sit in the driver's seat of a Model T cruising down the streets of Greenfield Village.
  • Help! What's Wrong with My T? – Bring your Model T to Greenfield Village for a day of antique-car trouble-shooting. Experts will examine each car for safety concerns and troubleshoot any mechanical problem you might have.
  • Mechanical Menace or Marvelous Machine? – This two day workshop will take you inside the amazing mechanics of the Model T!
  • Beginning Weaving – Discover all you ever wanted to know about weaving. You'll learn to warp the thread, setup the loom and weave your own tabby scarf.
  • Pottery – Using traditional forming methods, students will create, decorate and glaze red-ware tiles and plates.
  • Tinsmithing – Join the Greenfield Village tinsmith to learn the basics of tinsmithing. You'll use traditional techniques to create 19th-century tinware that is both practical and decorative.
  • Brewing Your Own Beer – Learn to brew a batch of beer from start to finish and explore how ancient recipes and techniques hold up to modern scientific techniques. Fun hands on learning, plus you get to drink beer!
  • Spring Cooking – Stir up history, while preparing and enjoying two savory suppers influenced by the spring season. One supper will be prepared over the hearth at the 1760's Daggett Home; the second meal will be made on the coal stove of the 1880's Firestone Home.
  • Draft Horse Workshop I and II– Experience the joys of driving draft horse. Two different levels offer unique experiences with the Percheron horses at Greenfield Village. Beginners will learn to hitch and drive the horse-drawn omnibus through the Village. The more advance riders will learn the daily upkeep of an 1880's and using the horses to plow the field.

The classes are offered throughout the summer. There are six sessions of Discovery Camps from June 20 to August 5. Reservations are required and prices vary, for more information about the classes and camps at The Henry Ford go to thehenryford.org or call (313) 982-6001.

Members to The Henry Ford receive discount prices for all camps and classes. Membership starts at as little as $39 and includes free unlimited admission to Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum.
