BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Some pets displaced by Hurricane Katrina have relocated to metro Detroit, and now need new homes, Local 4 reported.
With no shelter, food or water, many owners were forced to surrender their pets after Katrina hit, Local 4 reported.
The Michigan Animal Rescue League and the Animal Care Network returned from the Gulf Coast region with 16 dogs and 16 cats.
"It was very emotional to see not only the animals, but the people suffering as much as they did," said animal rescuer Matt Schaecher.
The Arphanage in Mobile, Ala., was the temporary shelter for many of animals that lost their homes in New Orleans. Now, many of the displaced pets have relocated to Michigan, where they're in the care of the Oakland County vet's office.
The animals will get cleaned up and checked out and will then be ready for adoption at local shelters, the station reported.
"There are so many animals down there that won't get help. It's nice that … we brought 16 dogs and 16 cats (and) it makes a big difference to them," said Schaecher.
