It is hard to imagine a school in the year 2006 that does not have adequate computer access for their students, but that is a reality in some Detroit schools, said Local 4's Rhonda Walker in her 4 Your Children Segment.Local 4 spotlighted the women of the Renaissance Chapter of the Links Inc., who didn't just see the need for computers, they did something about it. They pulled their resources together to help students keep up with the growing world of technology.Children at Courtis Elementary School on Detroit's west side will have a new state-of-the-art computer lab when they return to school after spring break thanks to the Renaissance Chapter, Local 4 reported.
With many students in the area without home computers, it is an invaluable resource, said Walker."We get feedback from the parents. The parents are very excited about this," said Velva Clark, of the Renaissance Chapter. At Courtis, the Links Inc. provide tutoring, mentoring and computer training for the parents. The Links Inc. is an international organization of 11,000 African-American women of all ages, who are accomplished and highly educated, including corporate executives and doctors. They are linked in friendship and service, and give to many causes including the Museum of African-American History. There are hundreds of chapters across 42 states and three countries, Local 4 reported.Joya Harris, the president of the Renaissance Chapter, said the group's fundraisers have yielded for the community, in many cases, over $200,000.Walker said she knows first-hand the significant impact the organization is making because she joined it last summer, and will be on-hand for the dedication of the second computer lab to Courtis this weekend. To learn more about the organization, visit RenaissanceLinks.org.
