"A few days ago, here in Eastern General Hospital, we had a nine-year old minor who gave birth to a baby. Fortunately, thanks to the medical team, both the mother and the child are in good health," said hospital director Enrique Rabago Solorio.

The baby was 5-and-a-half pounds.

Doctors say both mom and baby are in good health.

They are in the care of the girl's grandmother, but hospital staff says because of her age, the girl will need to have extensive follow-up visits.

"We must keep in mind that we are dealing with a minor. She will have mental and psychological evaluations," Solorio. "Fortunately she has the support of her grandmother. The baby is still the mother's child. I think that everything depends on the subsequent evaluations of the mother and her grandmother. In this vein, I believe that the baby can have a family,"

Local media reported the alleged father, a 17-year-old, fled the area after the baby was born.

The state's attorney general is investigating whether the case should be legally considered child sex abuse or rape.
