The Showdown in Motown is considered one of the top relay competitions in the county.
Local athletes can join in the fun Saturday and have a chance to land an academic scholarship, Local 4's Rhonda Walker reported.
The Showdown in Motown is sanctioned by the U.S. Track and Field Association. More than 30 Detroit high school track teams -- including Cass Tech, Renaissance, Mumford, Denby and Southfield Lathrup -- and some Ohio teams will compete in the Robert Shumake Scholarship relays at Martin Luther King Jr. High School.
Student athletes will compete for individual and team trophies, and also the opportunity to land the Robert Shumake Scholarship.
Shumake, a former Denby High School track star and founder of the event, went to college on a track scholarship and is on a mission to provide children the same opportunity. Shumake said the scholarship is focused on academics as well as athletics.
The United Negro College Fund will administer the scholarship awards.
"Anyone that has a 2.5 GPA and completes an application will be considered for this competitive scholarship," said Tiffany Douglas of the United Negro College Fund.
The Saturday event is $5 and will benefit the Robert Shumake Family Foundations College Scholarship Fund.
