Cook e-kitchen promotes healthy treats kids can make

DETROIT – Halloween is coming up and that means tricks and treats, but it doesn't have to be all about candy. HAP's cook e-kitchen promotes healthy, festive treats that your kids can make on their own.

From Cyclops pumpkin muffin to pumpkin spice apple dip and mummy pizzas, Chef Evelyn, from HAP, shares recipes that capture the flavor of the season.

"These are skinny bread. They come in whole wheat or white," said Chef Evelyn. "They're really well portioned, about 100 calories, so half of them are about 50 calories."

To create mummy pizzas, add a little pizza sauce and low-fat mozzarella string cheese. The cheese can be laid any kind of way. This is a way for kids to be creative in the kitchen, have a little fun and make their own pizza. Garnish with a couple olives and chopped peppers for eyes, then bake for five to 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

"We go by the 5-2-1-0 winning combination of healthy habits from the American Academy of Pediatrics where we teach them to get five fruit and vegetables a day," said Chef Evelyn. "Two hours less screen time, so get off the TV and go outside and play. That's one hour of play and zero sweetened beverages. When they go to the grocery store, they should get 100 percent fruit juice, not the colored stuff, but the healthy juice, and they like it."

Not only are these great recipes available at the cook e-kitchen online, so are "how to cook" videos for kids that teach food safety, including how to handle hot pans, raw meats and knives. The target ages for the videos are 8-years-old to 14-years-old, but clearly these are treats that kids off all ages will love.
