DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – Fans gathered for a high school football game in Dearborn Heights on Saturday were given a real treat thanks to a local mom who managed to pull off quite a surprise.
It was almost halftime at a varsity football game between Divine Child High School and their opponent rival Crestwood. While it looked like your typical Saturday afternoon high school game, what was about to happen was anything but typical.
An announcer called Wynter Nickless out to the field and what happened next was pretty special. Imagine her surprise to see her dad, retired Captain Stewart Nickless, home two months early from Afghanistan.
He had been hiding in a red pickup truck nearby, waiting for the right moment.
"I definitely didn't know," said Wynter Nickless. "It's very exciting."
"I was supposed to be there for six months," said Stewart Nickless. "That turned into four, so we decided to take advantage of it. I had been watching on the other side, it's so good to see her."
Wynter's mother, Daisy, worked with the school and the cheerleading coach set to pull it all off, and it was quite an elaborate plan.
"I'm so excited to be back with my family," said Stewart Nickless. "It feels so good to be back."
