Mother still has hope son's murder in Detroit will be solved nearly 3 years later

DETROIT – A mother who's son was shot and killed in Detroit almost three years ago is hoping her son's case gets solved this year.

Wendy White's son, Troy Sowell-Benson, was shot and killed outside of the Top of the Drive apartments on W. Outer Drive in Detroit on May 12, 2014. It happened a day after Mother's Day and 10 days after Sowell-Benson's 28th birthday. She called hospitals and the morgue the next day when her son did not come home, and the morgue told her that her son had been killed.

"I'm a nurse by day and it's like could I have helped him, but then I wouldn't have wanted to see him that way," White said.

She moved to another state after her son's murder as she continues to grieve the loss of her oldest child.

"There's nothing he would have did to hurt anybody. I can't move on with my life. It's like I'm at a standstill because a piece of me is missing and I don't know why," she said.

She's hoping the person responsible comes forward.

"Just come forward. Why would you take him away from his family and his daughters," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department.
