Scientists in Argentina reported they have cloned four cows that are capable of producing human insulin in their milk. Experts said it could prove to be a medical breakthrough in the fight against diabetes.
The cloned animals are still calves, but the scientists expect the animals will start producing insulin-infused milk when they reach adulthood.
Many people who suffer from diabetes rely on injections of insulin in order to maintain normal blood sugar levels.
The company that spearheaded the project, Bio Sidus, wants to open a pharmaceutical dairy for the insulin-producing cows in the future. The goal is to provide large quantities of human insulin at lower costs than the insulin that is currently available.
