A business in Farmington Hills, Mich., is offering women suffering from hair loss a unique option: keep using your regular hair stylist, even if you don't have any hair.
When a woman experiences hair loss for medical reasons, she often turns to her regular stylist for help. But many salons don't offer wigs for sale, and many stylists don't have experience fitting or styling wigs.
To make it easier for stylists and their clients, The Nailco Group has opened the first Raquel Welch Wig & Styling Showroom in Farmington Hills. The facility features a wide range of wigs, private consultation rooms, and a styling and cutting room to customize each wig. Stylists can bring their clients with them to the Showroom to find the perfect style.
HairUWear instructor Anne Kelley conducts classes to teach stylists how to work with the wigs. The class costs $25.
"I make them feel comfortable with handling the wigs, knowing how they're constructed, what they're made of, what they can and cannot do with these wigs, the products that they need to use with them," said Kelley.
Stylist Aaron Michael Kosiba became interested in learning how to work with wigs after one of his clients was diagnosed with breast cancer.
"She came and saw me before her treatment started, and I cut her hair quite short," said Kosiba. "After her hair started to come back in, all she was doing was wearing a wrap or a hat all the time, instead of actually using a wig."
It's a story Kelley has heard many times before.
"It's amazing how many people that you didn't even know in your community need this assistance because there's so many medical reasons why people wear wigs," said Kelley.
Larry Gaynor, the CEO and President of The Nailco Group, said there is a real need for a place like the Showroom.
"Everyone is touched by cancer," said Gaynor. "The response has been phenomenal, and it's only been opened since September."
The services are offered in conjunction with the American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Better" program. The wigs start at $119.
Kosiba said he hopes learning how to select, cut, and style wigs will help him assist his clients in the future.
"Our job is to make our clients look their best and feel their best every day, not just when they're healthy and well and life is going good," said Kosiba.
