Mich. woman sues New England Compounding Pharmacy for fungal meningitis infection

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A multistate outbreak of fungal meningitis linked to contaminated steroids distributed by New England Compounding Pharmacy is continuing to expand.

Michigan is reporting 43 cases of fungal meningitis in the national outbreak along with three non-meningitis infection cases related to the same contaminated steroids.
The number of Michigan meningitis cases is up by since Friday.

A steroid made by a Massachusetts pharmacy has been tied to a national outbreak of a rare fungal form of meningitis that has killed 15 across the country.

The Center for Disease Control reports 205 confirmed cases and 15 deaths nationwide, with Michigan sustaining the nations second highest number of injuries (43) and fatalities (3).

The first Michigan lawsuit was filed Monday by Marc Lipton of Lipton Law in Southfield, Michigan and Alyson Oliver of Oliver Law Group in Rochester.

The suit was filed on behalf of a 46 year old Howell resident who contracted fungal meningitis and remains hospitalized after receiving a steroid injection for back pain.

The woman seeks to hold the New England Compounding Pharmacy accountable for the costs she bears due to their lax procedures, and to represent all Michigan residents who have suffered economic losses as a result of the outbreak.
