Doctors Warn Of Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak In Wis.

Several Cases Reported Near Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE -- Doctors warned of an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Wisconsin's Milwaukee County, WISN-TV reported on Saturday.

Officials at St. Luke's Hospital said that there were eight known cases.

Most of the patients had some contact with Aurora St. Luke's South Shore, in Cudahy. It was not clear where the bacteria came from.

Legionnaires' disease is a water-borne bacteria, which makes people sick when they inhale contaminated water vapor. Nurses said that people can't catch it from an infected person, it has to be inhaled from the water vapor directly.

It takes its name from an outbreak at the Pennsylvania American Legion convention held at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia in July 1976.

Symptoms include pneumonia-like symptoms. It is treatable with antibiotics.

Anyone who thinks they have been exposed should contact their doctor.
