Researchers put some of the most popular cell phone brands to the test, not on service, but on safety, Local 4's Lila Lazarus reported.
For years there's been concern that radiation from cell phones could cause anything from headaches to brain tumors.
But researchers in Finland tested 12 of the most popular cell phone models worldwide and found the phones meet safety standards, emitting radiation well below the level that would be considered dangerous, Local 4 reported.
Scientists say the levels match up with data provided by the manufacturers.
Cell phone user Carole Zikowski says that's encouraging.
"I think, hopefully, companies are becoming more aware that what they're reporting, they're being held to that," said Zikowski.
The cell phone models tested in the study included several by Motorola and Nokia plus Samsung, Siemens and Sony.
Researchers plan to test 20 more models in the coming year, Local 4 reported.
The study did not determine if the safety standards to which the phones were measured against are up to par, and many cell phone users say that's the research for which they're waiting, Local 4 reported.
"We haven't done any long-term studies on them," said one cell phone user.
So far, most of the research on cell phone risks has been inconclusive, but a long-term international study is under way.
