Eighty-three cases of students sick with a stomach flu have now been reported on the University of Michigan campus.
Campus officials have reportedly asked sick students to stay in their rooms for two to three days to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Over two days, as many as 15 students in a wing of the Mary Markley Hall dormitory were stricken with a highly contagious viral gastroenteritis last week, according to
The Ann Arbor News.
As of Saturday, there were 70 reported cases, with most in Markley Hall, the university reported on its
Web site. Markley houses approximately 1,180 male and female students, mostly freshmen and sophomores, the paper reported.
The newest cases include one student in the South Quadrangle, two students in the East Quadrangle, three students in Mosher-Jordan Hall, one student in Baits Hall and one student in Bursley Hall, according to university officials.
The university's Occupational Safety and Environmental Health department has been following up with each report to confirm whether the student is part of the outbreak, and whether they are still contagious and having symptoms, the university reported.
The university reported the staff from housing, student affairs, OSEH, health services and Washtenaw County Public Health are monitoring the situation daily. The university released the following steps to be taken on campus to limit the transmission of the virus:
Residential dining services is providing liquids and foods as appropriate to sick residents by in-room delivery. The housing facilities has increased the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of the bathrooms and corridor where the sick students are housed, along with doorknobs, water fountains and stair rails. Residents are being provided with alcohol-based dry-hand washing pumps to encourage frequent washing. Signs have been placed throughout the buildings and at the dining rooms urging students to wash their hands before meals.
The university said the extra measures will remain in effect until campus and county health officials have determined that the spread of the virus is minimal.
