It's a major moment for expectant parents when they catch the first glimpse of their baby during a routine ultrasound.
To the untrained eye, traditional ultrasounds don't look like much, but that's changing in a major way. With new technology, parents are getting a new view.
In recent years, 3-D technology helped doctors and parents get a sneak peek at their unborn baby. A new fourth dimension gives parents pictures that are priceless.Terrie and Matt Burklew were eager to know which of the couple their new baby girl would look like."Oh, my gosh, that's easy. Her eyes, without a doubt. They've been called dreamy on more than one occasion," said Matt Burklew."I like all of his features. He has a great smile," said Terrie Burklew. Thanks to new technology, the Burklews will get to see who the baby really does look like, and more importantly, whether or not she's healthy. With the new four-dimensional ultrasound, parents-to-be can see the face, hands, spine, and even brain formation of the unborn baby.Vicky Acosta is a medical sonographer who is used to traditional ultrasounds."I remember when I first started, I could barely make out anything. You would just see a skeleton," said Acosta.Sally Grady, of the Medical Imaging Center, says that the 4-D technology isn't only exciting for parents, it can also show abnormalities such as a cleft palate, clubfoot or spina bifida.Currently, the technology is only available for gynecological purposes, but doctors hope to one day use it for breast biopsies. It would allow the doctor to see the needle exactly as it appears inside the body, Local 4 reported.
