Man Poses As Gynecologist

POSTED: Tuesday, October 5, 2004

Investigators said a manager of a Texas storage facility posed as a gynecologist and they're not sure how many women may have been victimized.

Dallas area police said Thomas Remo, 50, is not a gynecologist, but was pretending to be one when he was caught on tape by a police investigator who was posing as a would-be patient.

"I went to Arizona University. I graduated from the University of Arizona, he told the women.

Cameras caught Remo asking the investigator if the woman wanted a pap smear.

"And we'll do a pap smear. You wanted to have a pap today, right, yes?" asked Remo.

"When you say pap smear you mean, you know, the full," the investigator says on hidden camera.

"Yeah, the full gynecological exam," said Remo.

Investigators said Remo is a fraud.

"He does not have a license to practice medicine in any state. He has never attended medical school," said Bridget Eyler, the assistant district attorney in Dallas County.

Police said Remo advertised free gynecological services in an alternative newspaper and of all places, had set up shop at this storage garage.

Three women have filed complaints against him, but so far Remo's only been charged with practicing medicine without a license.

Remo's wife said she had no idea her husband was posing as a doctor -- a man who offered pap smears, breast exams and other intimate examinations even though he's not a doctor.

"It's hard, it's very, very hard. i want to go down there and shake him 'til his teeth rattle," said Leslie Remo.

Leslie Remo is charged with hindering arrest because she was home when police came after her husband and found him hiding in the house.

She said she didn't know he was home, didn't know he was posing as a doctor, and didn't know life could change so quickly.

"No one knows even the person they're closest to because you never know what's in someone's mind," she said.

Remo has talked to her husband in jail but said she still doesn't have a real explanation from him of what has occurred
