DEARBORN, Mich. -- A report released this week by a Dearborn middle school showed that there was a presence of mold in the building, but officials emphasized that children were not at risk, Local 4 reported. The Dearborn School District released a report that stated that microbial volatile organic compounds were detected at Bryant Middle School. These compounds are produced by mold and can cause nasal irritation, dizziness, fatigue and nausea, the station reported.
Last fall, parents were convinced that there was black mold in the school that was causing their children to get headaches. But the levels found at the school were far below what's considered to be a risk."The MVOCs at Bryant are 10 times below what is considered to be the acceptable level," said John Artis, Dearborn Schools superintendent.Local 4 obtained a safety review by a University of Michigan professor that states there are likely no health risks."This is a place that's perfectly safe. There is no health hazard," Artis said.Local 4's Lila Lazarus went inside the school on Wednesday and said there was a musty odor, which could be coming from water-damaged fiber boards in the roof. Repairing the boards could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, the station reported.Workmen were making some repairs to the building on Wednesday. The school's ducts have been cleaned and the ventilation system has been upgraded.Parents, like Cheryl Authier, said they were satisfied with the district's efforts."(My daughter has) never had a problem here and I've never had a problem here," said Authier. "I may notice a smell, but I just figure that's how Bryant smells."A final report on the findings is expected to be delivered to the school board on Aug. 22, the night before school starts.
