Migraine Device Promises To Zap Away Headaches

Ohio State University Neurologist Testing New Treatment

POSTED: 6:34 pm EST December 2, 2005

Migraines are misery for about 28 million Americans. While there are a number of drugs on the market, they work for only about half of the patients who take them, according to experts.

Now, researchers are testing a new device to zap headaches away.

It looks like a giant hair dryer, but the Transcranial Magnetic Simulator -- or TMS -- is actually the latest treatment being tested for migraines.

"By creating a magnetic field with this device, we're hoping that this will interrupt the electrical stimulation before it leads to the throbbing migraine headache," said the device's creator, Dr. Youself Mohammad, a neurologist.

Mohammad has been conducting the study at The Ohio State University.

Mohammad said the device is safe. The pulses feel like slight pressure.

One patient who is part of the study said her migraine episodes are down to 10 minutes with the TMS.
