Big Hopes For A Little Heart
Local Infant In Need Of New Heart
POSTED: Thursday, February 23, 2006
A local family is making a desperate plea for their 4-day-old baby.
Belinda and Michael Strong welcomed their son Kayden into the world on Feb. 14. Just a few hours later, nurses made a discovery that turned the day of overwhelming joy into a day of hope, Local 4 reported.
When a nurse took Kayden for his first bath, she noticed his lips were turning blue. Kayden was taken to Children's Hospital of Michigan, where doctors learned he was born with congenital heart disease, according to the station's reports.
To survive Kayden needs a new heart and he was added to the donor list.
While waiting for word on an available heart, Kayden is being treated in the Variety Cardiology Center at Children's Hospital.
At the Children's Hospital, 43 children have needed new hearts, and all 43 were successful, Local 4 reported. The national average is only 60 percent.
