Registration has begun for the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk, which will be held Aug. 11 through Aug. 13 in metro Detroit.
The 60-mile walk benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.
Participants walk an average of 20 miles a day during the event. They can choose to join training walks with other walkers, attend orientations and training expos, join a team or start their own team, according to event organizers.
The event is for people of all ages and fitness levels.
"It takes a strong individual to commit to fundraising and training of this magnitude. These walkers are heroes,” said Eileen Heisman, NPT president and CEO. "Because of their strength and dedication, together with the Komen Foundation, we are able to fund critical outreach programs in communities across America, while providing for those who may be facing breast cancer in future."
Registration for the walk is available by calling (800) 996-3DAY (3329) or online at www.the3day.org. Registration is limited and participants are encouraged to sign up soon to reserve a spot and receive training and fundraising materials.
Walkers pay a $90 entry fee and raise a minimum of $2,200 to participate, according to event organizers.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day walk is expected to raise millions of dollars in 2006 for breast cancer research. Walks will be held in other major cities including Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas and San Diego.
