NEWPORT, Mich. – Sarah Brandes of Newport, Mich., was just 29 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma.
For nearly three years, Brandes bravely battled the disease. She endured multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, numerous rounds of radiation and participated in a clinical trial.

She shared her story with Local 4 in 2013, in hopes of educating others about the risks of sun exposure and the importance of early detection.
Brandes lost her battle with melanoma on March 1st. She leaves behind a 13-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter.
Brandes' brother Michael spoke to Local 4 soon after her death about his sister and her efforts to save others from melanoma.
Brandes' friends say her lively sense of humor and love for life brought enjoyment to so many people. Even through her struggles with cancer, she never wanted people to feel sad for her or see her as anything other than the silly, loving person she was.
Brandes' friends are holding a fundraiser for her children on Sunday, May 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Newport Fire Station, 8473 Swan Creek Road in Newport.
The event will feature a carry out chicken dinner for $10, bake sale, basket raffles, 50/50 raffle and vendors.
All proceeds will go to Brandes' children. A benefit account has been set up at Monroe Bank & Trust.
