Life expectancy: Men up, women not so much

Researchers: Women aren't taking steps to prevent heart disease

The life expectancy of women has improved more slowly than men over the past 20 years – and has even decreased in some parts of the country.

Women are still expected to live an average of four years longer than men.  While the life span of males increased by four-point-six years, females had an increase of only two-point-seven years since 1999.

Over 600 counties reported no change or a decrease in female life expectancy.

Why the decrease?

Researchers say women aren't taking care of high blood pressure and cholesterol as well as men.  In addition, women aren't as encouraged to take medications to prevent heart disease.
