Local 4 Medical Expert Dr. Frank McGeorge says common but contagious diseases are spreading

DETROIT – Some common but contagious diseases are what's going around this week, according to Local 4 Medical Expert Dr. Frank McGeorge.

Local hospitals report breathing problems, sore throats and hand foot and mouth disease as problems for a lot of people across Metro Detroit.

In Wayne County, Children's Hospital is treating asthma and strep throat.

Henry Ford Fairlane is treating upper respiratory infection, nausea and vomiting. Internal medicine of Grosse Pointe Farms is treating coughs and upper respiratory illnesses.

Everyone in Wayne County is seeing allergies.

Moving to Oakland County, Farmington Hills Internists is treating allergies. Clarkston Urgent Care is seeing nausea and vomiting and hand foot and mouth disease.

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland has kids with fevers, vomiting and upper respirator problems.

In Washtenaw County, the emergency room at St. Joseph Mercy is seeing injuries from people working outside and broken ones from sporting events.

In Macomb County, St. John Macomb Oakland Hospital is seeing bronchitis.

Both Henry Ford Medical Center Lakeside and Sterling Heights are seeing sore throats from strep and pink eye, plus some hand foot and mouth disease.

McLaren Medical Center is seeing more injuries from outdoor activities, particularly injuries from diving accidents.

Finally St. Clair County's Downriver Community Service in New Haven is seeing upper reparatory infections, sinusitis and fevers.

With regard to swimming safety, Local 4 Medical Expert Dr. Frank McGeorge says you should always know the depth of the water you are diving into.  Also, remember, water levels on natural lakes and rivers change from year to year as do the position of sand bars.  Diving head first can be very dangerous.
