Rescue 4 Undercover obtained documents that show Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick rehired former Police Chief Jerry Oliver weeks after he resigned.

Oliver was apparently placed into the position of assistant police chief, with an annual salary of $140,000, Rescue 4 reported.

A memo addressed to Oliver and signed by the mayor said, "Looking forward to 'Our future…Right here, Right now.'"

Oliver resigned on Oct. 31, 2003 while under fire for charges that a gun was found in his luggage before boarding a plane at Detroit's Metropolitan Airport on Oct. 18.

The city handed over payroll records to Rescue 4 that showed Oliver worked as assistant chief for about eight weeks and made about $25,000.

Detroit Budget Director Robert Short said that Oliver was hired in that position to help in the transition of replacing him as chief.

"We could not have two chiefs, so what we did during this transition period was to put Mr. Oliver into an AC position," Short said.

Oliver contacted Local 4 to say that the memos are bogus and that he never worked as assistant chief.
