Detroit Metropolitan Airport ranks 3rd on national survey of healthful restaurants
Dietitians grade Wayne County airport as 3rd healthiest airport, Atlanta at bottom of list
Travelers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport can dine at 52 restaurants serving at least one healthy meal.
The Wayne County airport ranked third for having the most healthful restaurants out of 18 high traffic airports surveyed around the county.
Dietitians from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) surveyed restaurants inside major airports in more than a dozen states.
They rated each restaurant with a point system by looking at such criteria as whether the eatery included at least one low-fat, high-fiber or cholesterol-free vegetarian meal on the menu.
A final percent score was assigned by dividing the number of restaurants serving health-conscious fare by the total number of restaurants inside the airport.
Out of the 58 restaurants inside Detroit's Metro Airport 91 percent are serving some form of healthful food.
The results also found that 76 percent of airports surveyed offer at least one healthy meal to hungry travelers.
However, healthy food choices were harder to find at some airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Los Angeles International.
"Healthful vegetarian meals at airports across the country are just the ticket for traveling light this holiday season," says PCRM director of nutrition education Susan Levin, M.S., R.D. "But some airports still serve too many greasy cheeseburgers and slices of pepperoni pizza that leave passengers feeling grounded."
The report says the number of airport restaurants offering healthful foods has increased from 2001, when PCRM’s airport food review found just 57 percent of airport eateries offering at least one healthful option.
Newark Liberty International Airport ranks at the top for the first time with a score of 92 percent. It’s a dramatic improvement from 2003, when just 60 percent of its restaurants offered a healthful option.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport makes the most impressive gain, with a 13-point increase in the number of restaurants offering a healthy option.
Las Vegas made an 8-point improvement over last year.
San Francisco International Airport was the biggest loser, with a 19-point decrease from last year’s score.
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson lost 13 points this year and remains in last place with a score of 58 percent.
