Nausea, vomiting, tiredness, headaches… the list goes on. These are a just few of the symptoms women experience when they are pregnant. Now add an illness on top of that. Oof. Talk about feeling horrible. So what is the best way to deal with being sick while pregnant? Here are a few things you can do:

Get as much rest as you possibly can. If you already have a child, or children, nap when they nap or have someone come take care of them while you get some sleep. The more you rest, the faster you will heal and the better you will feel.

Take Your Vitamins
Be sure you are still taking all your vitamins and if you haven’t added Vitamin C to your daily intake, you should think about it. Studies have shown that Vitamin C could reduce the frequency, duration, or severity of a cold. If you don’t want to add yet another vitamin to your prenatal regimen then stock up on lots of fruits and veggies.

No, not booze! Drink lots of water. Water will help keep you hydrated, which is very important during pregnancy, but will also help flush out toxins. Try to carry a water bottle with you at all times so you are sure not to forget to drink up!

If you need to, you can take certain medications while pregnant. Be sure to first talk to your obstetrician before taking anything. I keep a list my doctor gave me on my refrigerator that looks like this:

Headaches/Pain: Tylenol/Extra Strength Tylenol
Allergies: Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra
Cough: Robitussen DM
Congestion: Sudafed
Heartburn and Gas: Maalox, Mylanta, Gas-X, Tums, Zantac 75
Combination Medications: Tylenol Cold, Tylenol Sinus, Tylenol PM, Nyquil, Dayquil

Most importantly, remember that you can’t do it all… especially when you don’t feel well. Take some time for yourself to heal and hopefully you will feel better soon!
