Fast-Food Fixes For Your Favorites
Dining on fast food usually means you?re committing a crime against your waistline. From time to time, though, eating on the run is inescapable. After all, what are you supposed to do when you?re on the road with no other stop in sight? Or if you have to dash off to a morning meeting without breakfast? Or the kids insist on pizza (again)? To avoid loads of calories and fat, here are seven smart swaps.
Latte -- Macchiato
First off, always ditch the whipped cream, because that?ll add 70 calories and 7 grams of fat. And because lattes are more milk than coffee, they're very calorie dense. The macchiato switches the milk in the drink for a steamy froth on top. Also, ask for non-fat milk and sugar-free syrups.
Fruit smoothie -- Flavored iced tea
While fruit smoothies sound like they're healthy, some places mix high-fructose corn syrup, ice cream and candy bars in their blender-whipped concoctions. If you're not absolutely sure the smoothie contains only fruit, yogurt, and ice, opt for flavored iced tea, which could save you more than 500 calories.
Fried chicken -- Skinless fried chicken
When you lose the chicken skin, you drop about 200 calories and 17 grams of fat. Even if it's not advertised on menus, you can usually request a shedding of the skin.
Sausage breakfast sandwich -- Ham breakfast sandwich
When it comes to smart meat choices, bacon tops sausage and ham trumps them both. Favoring ham over sausage can slash the calories in that sandwich by almost 300. Also, ask for an English muffin instead of a bagel, croissant, or biscuit.
Steak burrito -- Mexican chicken salad
Some places pride themselves on making giant burritos. But that'll just lead to an over-size waistline. A chicken salad option will fulfill your favorite south of the border flavors, with 500 fewer calories.
Piled-high grinder -- Whole-grain sandwich
Delis and sandwich shops love to slather on their secret sauce (which is often some mayo-based goop) and load you up with high-calorie breads. When ordering, ask for whole-grain bread and opt for mustard instead of the mayo-type sauces. Same goes for burger joints: Skip the special sauce.
Pan pizza slices -- Thin-crust veggie
Healthy toppings such as pineapple, peppers, mushrooms, and ham can cut calories and fat in half, compared to a typical slice of pan pepperoni pizza.
