Every year, young, seemingly healthy student athletes die from sudden cardiac arrest. Experts say these deaths can be due to abnormal heart structure or abnormal rhythms that can lead to cardiac arrest. To help detect young people at risk for sudden cardiac arrest, Beaumont offers free heart checks to high school students at Healthy Heart Check Student Heart Screening Program events throughout the year.
The student heart check includes a medical history, blood pressure check, physical exam, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and an echocardiogram, if needed.
The program is designed for students ages 13 - 18 and in high school.
The next free student heart screening is Saturday, September 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at D1 Detroit, 799 Denison Ct., in Bloomfield Township.
There are 250 slots remaining. You must register in advance.

These screenings cost $25.
